Lego Investing 75243 Slave 1 20th Anniversary

Lego Investing Slave 1 20th Anniversary

Yes, it has been 21 years since Lego made the leap and got the Star Wars license. While The Phantom Menace was not 100 percent satisfying for fans of the original films, it did do one important thing. The new Star Wars movies inspired a new generation to fall in love with Star Wars. Over 20 years later, Lego is still cranking out Star Wars sets. This line accounts for almost half of all the sets Lego releases a year. Yeah, as Ron Burgundy would say, "its kinda of a big deal."

To celebrate the 20 years of acquiring the Star Wars liscense, Lego released sets featuring some of the classic molds and prinings of the original Lego Minifigure designs from that era. Fans are very happy about that, as am I.
The question in this article is what is the resale value of this set? There is a lot to like. It is a smaller scale detailed build of the UCS Slave 1 that recently retired. Unfortunately, the fact that these sets were released and will retire so close together hurts the value of both sets. Lego has given us a Slave 1 every 2 - 3 years. The aftermarket simply has lots of retired Slave 1 sets lingering like a house guest that won't leave.

As a point of comparison, let us look at the Slave 1 set from 2006. This set retailed for 50 dollars and is currently reselling at 200 dollars. Its a nice jump, but remember it took 14 years for it to resell for that. That's how flooded the secondary marketplace is with Slave 1 sets. You can find quite a few out there from 2006 or longer still sealed.
Gloom and Doom aside. We will use the 2006 Slave 1 numbers and apply it to our current Slave 1. In 5 years, it should be reselling at around 204 dollars. Yes, it will turn a profit for you. However, I would rather not wait 5 years to only gain about 30 percent on this set. I am adding in taxes, seller fees, and keeping it stored as additional costs.

Bottom line: Although I love Boba Fett and I love the Slave 1, I bought this set to build and display. I will not be looking to resell it sealed down the road.
